Working with Syllables (2). Syllables are important as they are the first thing we hear in words.  Syllables are the beats.  Each syllable has a vowel.  Syllables helps us read and spell.

When reading your child's reader or a story book become a syllable detective:

Clap twice and ask them to find some words on the page that have 2 syllables. Then say and clap them. (Do lots of these)

''Syllables" are something mums, dads and carers can do at home that has a huge effect on your child's achievement with reading at school. Try it this week.

Mum: I see you're learning about the yellow poster. What's that about?
· We do the right thing because it is the best thing to do. It takes great strength to be sensible.
Mum: How are you going with 'being sensible?'
· Good (most kids will say this)
Mum: How do you know how you are going 'good'?
· (if you need to help try this:  what does 'being sensible' look like in the classroom? On the bus? At the footy? On the playground?  At home?
Mum: What can you do to get better at being sensible/doing the right thing?
Mum: Who can help you have great strength to be sensible?

Tomorrow  (Monday) our prayer service is based on The Visitation. It is the 2nd Joyful mystery of the Rosary. We will tell the Visitation story through drama and dance.

The Year 3's are involved singing a song while some of the Year 56 girls will  lead  actions and one of our talented Year 5 students  will dance. This will be very special.

We then recite a decade of the Hail Mary  and then Year 4 students will lead us all in singing Hail Holy Queen. It is a different prayer service and it is very joyful, so if you can join us, please do so!

At the recent School Board meeting it was very encouraging to hear about many of the great initiatives happening in our school such as the Colour Run which amazingly raised $7000 for new playground equipment. Another great initiative is the planned installation of a new lift to allow students (and anyone from our school community) with mobility issues to easily access between the upper and lower levels of the school. I am also sure that the very positive, friendly and inclusive culture we have in our school is part of the reason why enrolments for 2018 are looking very healthy at this stage. On the academic front, the teaching and learning goals in the Annual Action Plan have mostly been met or exceeded and teachers are working together to see how learnings from this can be incorporated into practice next year.

The process of revising the School’s key policies has been completed by the Board and after some final touches these will be published on the School’s web page. Parental engagement is a key focus of the Board and the recently developed Facebook page is a useful tool established to support this focus.  The vision for the parent Facebook page is that it becomes a site which provides practical resources that assist us in our ever challenging role as parents.

This week we celebrate two major Feasts in the Church.

All Saints is on Wednesday 1st November.

All Souls is in Thursday 2nd November.

For All Saints day students are going to be invited to participate in a 'Saints Quest' using QR codes. They will discover how that Saint lived out their faith to a strong, brave disciple of Jesus. To celebrate this day all students will be given a water iceblock if they would like one.

On All Souls day, each class will be invited to the Church and each child will light a candle for someone who has died.   We will then gather as a school community for communal prayer at 12:55 in the Church. Parents are invited to attend.

Praying for the living and the dead is one of the Spiritual acts of Mercy in the Catholic faith.

We invite you to choose one of the following links (or more if you like) to participate in a very, very short survey.  Surveys close next Friday – 20/10/17.

Right now , there are 23,000 young people across Australia living with the devastating impacts of cancer. By buying a bandana you can help provide counselling and peer support for them when they are in their darkest hours.

OLW is one of the top National Day fundraisers according to the letter I recently received. We take on this fundraising in memory of a former student, Dane Lewis. The Year 6 students will be promoting and selling the bandannas

Students wear the bandannas on Friay 27th- National Bandanna Day. This is a big event for our school. We all wear bandannas to the special liturgy we hold.  You can wear a bandanna on your head, arm, wrist, neck.

We are selling bandannas now in the school office for $5. They can sell out pretty fast- don't leave it until the last day!!Please support generously like you have in the past.

Manipulating Sounds (1).

Being able to manipulate sounds not letters in words is important as it helps us recognise words and patterns when we read or spell.  This week teach your child how to manipulate sounds (not letters in words)

Use compound words like "toothbrush" but do both parts of the word.
If I say "toothbrush" and don't say, "tooth" what's left?
If I say "toothbrush" and don't say "brush" what's left?"

OTHER WORDS: football, basketball, grandmother, grandfather, together, moonlight, railroad, skateboard, anybody, nobody, everything, nothing, sometimes, because, without. (google 'compound words for more'.)

'Sound Manipulation' is something mums, dads and carers can do at home that has a huge effect on your child's achievement with reading at school. Try it this week.

Parent: I see you're learning about the 4 Steps this week. What are they?

· Good learner know what they are learning about; know what to do to be successful, know their next steps; seek, act, receive and give feedback.

Parent: How are you going with the 4 Steps?

· Good (most kids will say this)

Parent: How do you know how you are going 'good'?

· (if you need to help try this:  tell me about something you’re learning about , what do you need to do to be successful?)

Parent: What can you do to get better at the 4 Steps?

Parent: Who can help you with the 4 steps?

Why do this? Research shows that by showing an interest in what your child is learning at school significantly impacts on their achievement at school. This short 5 min conversation takes a while to develop but it is so much better than the "What-did-you-do-today-at-school? --Nothin!" conversation.
